Make-A-Wish Foundations Over The Edge 2018 Fundraiser
Every year, Over The Edge gives individuals the opportunity raise money for charity and rappel down one of Austin's largest skyscrapers. All proceeds go to help grant wishes through the Make-a-Wish foundation. This year, Austinites help to raise more than $550,000 and we got the chance to help them tell the whole story!

3 VR Campaigns That Got It Right
When was the last time you bought something online? Probably fairly recently. And there’s a good chance that pair of shoes, or that rug or that fancy new uber-blender didn’t quite match the description you had in your mind. But what if you could see that rug in your house before you hit the buy button? Or what if you could try on those fancy new sneakers from the comfort of your living room without having to enter your credit card number? Want to see how that how that blender really looks in your kitchen? Well guess what, thanks to the power of Extended Reality (XR) now you can! (XR includes virtual and augmented reality experiences as well as 360° video).
VR & 360° Video Austin MeetUp
After meeting at a VR community event in early 2016, Ricky Holm (CM&D) and Andrew Caven (HTC Vive) got the crazy idea to start a MeetUp group. Their concept was simple: Help foster the local VR/AR/360 scene through education, knowledge sharing and community. Today VR & 360° Video Austin is the largest non-gaming focused VR/360° Video event in the country outside the state of California.
Circuit of the Americas Track Day Ride Along
Ever wanted to ride in a race car!? Us too! Partly as a proof of concept, partly as a passion project, the CM&D team headed out the Circuit of the Americas race track in Austin TX last fall for a track day racing session.
Filming 360° video in close quarters and at high speed has its fair share of technical challenges. We wanted to see how well we could capture the moment and place the user inside the experience!
Take a look and let us know how we did!
Big thanks to Mr. Joe Corso and the team at Edge Addicts.
The True Meaning Behind National Donut Day
There's more to the average donut than meets the eye.
One might think that National Donut Day is all about indulging in a few sweet pastries and treating your friends to a nice morning snack. However there is much more to the story.
Back in 1938 the Salvation Army started National Donut Day as a way to pay honor to the 'Dollies' of World War I; A group of female volunteers that served warm donuts to enlisted men on the front lines.
The story goes something like this.
In 1917, the Salvation Army sent a fact-finding mission to Europe to figure out what they could do to help the men fighting on the front lines. As a result of this mission, the US Army set up what would be called 'Huts' that served baked goods, provided wrapping paper, stamps and clothes mending services to the soldiers. About 250 female volunteers traveled to Europe to help run these Huts. Because of the difficulties providing fresh bread or other baked goods on the war-torn frontlines, two volunteers by the name of Margaret and Helen came up with the idea of serving donuts (it's much easier to set up a few frying vats than a complex baking oven). The concept was an instant hit!! It wasn't uncommon for a team of two women to serve up more than 200 fresh donuts each day!
So the next time you bite into a delicious warm donut, you can say a quick thank you to the 'donut girls' of World War I.
Happy National Donut Day y'all!
